Cranial Osteopathy uses tiny, gentle manipulations to the skull, spinal column and sacral area, with the aim of restoring balance
How did Cranial Osteopathy begin?Cranial Osteopathy began in the early part of the 20th Century , by a man called William Garner Sutherland.
He discovered that a small amount of movement is allowed between the individual bones in the skull. Cranial osteopathy ensures that this movement is present in order to maintain balance.
What is the treatment process involved in Cranial Osteopathy?A Cranial Osteopath uses tiny, gentle manipulations to the skull, spinal column and sacral area, with the aim of restoring balance. Cranial osteopaths are trained to feel a very subtle, rhythmical shape change that is present in all body tissues. This is called Involuntary Motion or the Cranial Rhythm Tension in the body disrupts the cranial rhythm. Practitioners compare what your rhythm is doing to what they consider ideal.
This shows them what stresses and strains your body is under at present, and what tensions it may be carrying as a result of its past history. It also gives them an insight into the overall condition of your body, for example if it is healthy, or stressed and tired.
What is the aim of Cranial Osteopathy treatment?Cranial osteopathy aims to treat the whole person not just the condition, so a very wide range of situations may benefit from treatment. These may include back and neck pain; joint pain and sports injuries; headaches, migraines and sinus problems; stress; recurrent infection; period pain; digestive difficulties; and treatment may also benefit general health and well-being. In babies and children many problems such as crying, colic, sleeping and feeding difficulties may be helped.
What conditions can be treated with Cranial Osteopathy? The most common conditions treated with cranial osteopathy are joint problems. In children it can also help a range of conditions such as colic, crying, irritability, disturbed sleep patterns, learning difficulties, glue ear and more. There has also been some improvement in conditions such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD and autism.
It is suitable for people of all ages, it is very gentle which makes it especially suitable for babies, the elderly and the chronically ill.
