Are you right brain dominant or ADHD?
Most of the people with ADHD are considered right brainer dominant because many of the characteristics associated with being "right brained" are characteristics sometimes associated with ADHD as well.
Studies showing the link between right brain and ADHD could be found @ http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2834536/.
Let us understand how brain works and right brain dominance.
How is the brain classified and who has developed the concept of right brain and left brain? The human brain is made up of two halves. These halves are commonly called the right brain and left brain, but should more correctly be termed ‘hemispheres’. The concept of right brain and left brain thinking developed from the research in the late 1960s by an American psychobiologist Roger W Sperry. He discovered that the human brain has two very different ways of thinking.
Sperry was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1981 for his discovery. You can view his achievement @ http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/medicine/laureates/1981/press.html
What are the characteristics of each side of the brain? The right brain is visual and processes information in an intuitive and simultaneous way, looking first at the whole picture then the details.
The left brain is verbal and processes information in an analytical and sequential way, looking first at the pieces then putting them together to get the whole.
What are the characteristics of the Right-Brained people?According to the left-brain, right-brain dominance theory, the right side of the brain is best at expressive and creative tasks. Some of the abilities popularly associated with the right side of the brain include:
• Recognizing faces
• Expressing emotions
• Reading emotions
What are the characteristics of the Left Brained people? The left-side of the brain is considered to be adept at tasks that involve logic, language, and analytical thinking. The left-brain is described as being better at:
• Critical thinking
What are the less dominant left-brained skills in ADHD people?Less dominant left-brained skills in ADHD people are linear processing, executive functions, structured in memory and thought.
What are the most dominant right-brained skills in ADHD people?More dominated right-brained skills in ADHD people are pattern recognizing, creativity, big-picture learning and emotional engagement.
What are the traits exhibited during learning by Right-Brained Children with ADHD?Creative kids tend to be right-brained, and when in learning situations they prefer to:
• Be shown rather than told how to do a task.
• Solve problems by looking at similarities and patterns.
• Draw rather than write.
• Physically handle objects.
• Answer open-ended questions rather than multiple choice tests.
• Discuss topics.
• Assimilate whole chunks of information rather than break them down into discrete facts.
